The new practice area at PGA Catalunya in Caldes de Malavella Spain, which measures 5,000 sq m and is being built behind the eighteenth green of the resort’s Tour course, includes more targets on the driving range, for fairway, short iron, chipping and bunker play, target-shaped greens with bunkers and a private practice tee with fairway bunker. The designers are using a tri tier approach using three greens, each with different grasses (bermuda, bent and poa), and five bunkers, each with a different type of sand (Augusta National supersand, St Andrews links, Hawaii volcanic, parkland and windy-course), allows players to practice a wide range of different shots. This type of design allows for golfers to hone skills on multiple types of surfaces, which they may encounter at different courses. Construction work has already begun and the resort says the new practice area should be ready for use by mid-November.
