Architecture firm Torti Gallas and Partners, Inc.'s MacArthur Park Subway, Shops and Residence project is coming together rapidly. The project's first phase, referred to as Block 1, borders Bonnie Brae to the east, Westlake to the West and 7th Street to South and contains 90 affordable units, 16,000 square feet of retail and 200 parking spaces, some of which are Metro replacement parking spaces. Block 2 will just about double the retail and units from Block 1, be built in the parking lot between Westlake and Alvarado, and "frame a plaza around the existing Metro portal. Block 2 breaks ground in early 2012 and finishes the following year, while Block 1 finishes in April 2012. The entire $45 million project includes 172 units, all affordable, and was developed by McCormack Baron Salazar.
